To honor Mandela, carry on the spirit

We mourned the passing of a great leader, Nelson Rolihi Ahla Mandela, the Alliance sent sincere condolences to the entire Mandela family.

Not only Mandela is the first black person to be elected democratically as a president, he actually won the love of almost all his compatriots. He is a remarkable person who acts as an anti-apartheid icon and the father of modern South Africa. In his lifetime, even he spent 27 years in prison, he believed in the redemptive power of forgiveness and he continued to fight for equality in South Africa, successfully led the emancipation of South Africa from white domination. As president, he strived to find lasting solutions to poverty, unemployment in South Africa. The impact of his efforts -- to reconcile generosity with pragmatism and to find the common ground between humanity’s higher values and his own aspiration to power, has not only earned him the Noble Peace Award in 1993, but also earned the respect and love from all his compatriots.

Mandela was not just a world icon, but a father, a grandfather, a husband and to many South Africans he represented the best of what black people could be, the best of what white people could be, and an example for us all. One of Mandela’s famous quotes: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”. We shared the same vision and firmly believed that education is the key to fight against poverty, and we had turned the idea into the International Dreams Come True Scholarship program.

The Alliance will carry Mandela’s spirit of fearless leadership and his guidance of leading divided country into an era of racial peace and economic prosperity. We believe his legacy is not dependent solely on his presence.
