Benin, officially the Republic of Benin, is located in West Africa bordered by Togo to the west, by Nigeria to the east and by Burkino Fast and Niger to the north. The capital is Porto-Novo.



Benin has a population of approximately 9.87 million with following main ethnic groups: Fon (39.2%), Adja (15.2%), Yoruba (12.3%), Bariba (9.2%), Peulh (7%), Ottamari (6.1%) and others. The largest religious groups in Benin are Roman Catholicism (27.1%), Muslim (24.4%), Vodoun (17.3%) and Protestantism (10.4%).


The official language of Benin is French. Indigenous languages such as Fon and Yoruba are commonly spoken. The national currency is Communaute Financiere Africaine franc (XOF).


Benin is a tropical, sub-Saharan nation, and therefore agriculture is one main industry in the country. Its economy has continued to strengthen over the past years, the main driver of growth is the agricultural sector with cotton being the main export goods, cashews, shea butter, textiles, palm products and seafood are also the major export commodities supporting to the economy. Main exports partners are China, India, Lebanon, Niger and Nigeria.
